Glenbrook North takes Vernon Hills Sectional

VERNON HILLS — The Glenbrook North boys bowling team notched its first big milestone by winning the Vernon Hills Sectional Saturday.
The Spartans advanced to the state meet as a team in their third season of existence, nabbing the sectional crown with 6,026 total pins at Brunswick Zone Hawthorn. Host Vernon Hills also advanced, finishing second with 5,957 pins.
“I thought we could come in second, but the way these guys stepped up — so consistent, so impressive,” GBN coach Todd Rubin said. “Being a new program, we’ve had the chip on the shoulder. This is something everyone can be proud of.”
The top two teams at the sectional advanced to state. Senior Tim Schultz paced GBN by placing fifth overall with 1,269 pins. Teammate Corey Kahen finished sixth with 1,262.
Vernon Hills was led by senior Eric Swanson, who won the individual crown with a score of 1,370. Senior teammate Justin Onozato was close behind, finishing second with 1,333.
“The No. 1 goal was to get the team to state,” said Swanson, who used a new ball to start the meet but switched after Game 2. “After the fifth game (with GBN leading Lake Zurich 4,992-4,952), I knew I had to stay focused. But we did it as a team. I’m so happy we pulled through.”
Also advancing to next week’s state meet — at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon — were Deerfield junior Anthony Tometz and New Trier junior Andrew Textor. Tometz (1,278) was third overall, while Textor (1,271) finished fourth.
Lake Zurich, which stood in second place after five games, ended up in third place, totaling 5,871 pins. Bears senior Mike Schmitt emerged as one of six bowlers throughout the state with a shot to make the cut for state as an at-large candidate, placing seventh overall with 1,259 pins. Schmitt’s qualification is dependent upon other sectional results.
“Your big players have to make big plays, and the GBN kids did,” LZ coach Peter Kupfer said.
