Loyola grad Remick drafted by Seattle

Dylan Remick’s excelled at every level of his soccer career.
Remick was a standout at Loyola as a four-year varsity player and two-time all-state selection. At Brown, the four-year starting defender was a three-time all-Ivy League pick and second-team All-American as a senior.
Now, the 21-year-old will get an opportunity to prove himself as a professional after the Seattle Sounders drafted Remick on Thursday in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft.
“You always hope, but you never really know,” said Remick, who participated in the MLS Combine in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., from Jan. 11 to Tuesday. “When I heard my name called, it was an amazing feeling.”
A 2009 Loyola graduate, Remick followed the draft online in the basement of his childhood home in Inverness. Once the Sounders made him the 35th overall pick, the organization gave him a call. He shared the moment with his father, Rick Remick.
“That was special to me,” Dylan Remick said of being with his family. “It’s something I will never forget.”
The 6-foot, left-footed Dylan Remick made his mark throughout his time at Brown, but he became a pro prospect during the final two seasons on the Providence, R.I., campus. He helped the Bears to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including a spot in the second round as a senior. With Dylan Remick in the back in the fall, Brown allowed only 12 goals in 19 games.
“He was an outstanding player for us,” said Brown coach Pat Laughlin, who coached Dylan Remick all four seasons. “One of the things that separates him from others is his athletic ability, one that allows him to get up and down the field all game long. That’s a great quality.”
But Laughlin mostly highlighted Dylan Remick’s intangibles.
“He’s someone who can handle the good and the bad without fluctuating emotionally,” the coach said. “He never gets too high or too low. A lot of what makes him special is above the neck.
“Once he realized he could play professionally, he did improve himself. He loves a challenge, and he embraces it. That’s a huge asset.
“I look forward to watching the next phase of his career.”
Dylan Remick said he was flying to Seattle on Sunday and will report to preseason practice Monday. The MLS season starts in March.
The Sounders are entering their fifth season as an MLS expansion team. Seattle has reached the U.S. Open Cup final, qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs and led the league in attendance — the Sounders averaged a league-record 43,144 fans per game in 2012 — in each of its first four seasons.
The Sounders lost on aggregate to the LA Galaxy in the 2012 Western Conference Championship series.
“The plan is to chase this dream as long as I can,” Dylan Remick said. “Once the journey comes to an end, I will start thinking about other things. Right now, soccer is the only thing on my mind.”
