BUFFALO GROVE — It’s never easy to play less than 24 hours after a loss.

But New Trier managed to do the better job Saturday afternoon, beating Buffalo Grove 65-56 in a nonconference contest.

Senior forward Steven Cook made all 10 of his free throws for a team-best 24 points as the Trevians bounced back from Friday’s 47-45 overtime setback at Maine South.

“That was a tough loss (Friday), so our goal was to come out here and get a win to put that behind us,” said Cook, whose basket at the 2:56 mark in the first quarter gave New Trier the lead for good. “We started off slowly and didn’t accomplish some of our goals, but we did enough to win. We were able to pull it out.”

Behind two baskets and two free throws by Cook, the Trevians took control early in the third quarter and led by as many as 14.

Despite Andrew Apel’s game-high 25 points — the junior guard’s best offensive output of the season — the Bison, who lost to Rolling Meadows 63-56 on Friday, never got closer than eight the rest of the way.

Buffalo Grove senior guard and leading scorer Luke Potnik finished with seven points, three of which came on a 3-point play with 0.5 seconds to go in the game.

“It was good to get (Friday’s) game out of our minds and rebound with a win,” New Trier junior guard Jordan Thomas said.
