In a low-scoring showdown on Friday, New Trier edged Glenbrook South.
Besides giving Glenbrook South trouble in the CSL South pennant race, why was this important? Because the IHSA is sending New Trier to the Glenbrook South Regional on Valentine’s Night.
That is, if No. 3 seed Glenbrook South knocks off No. 14 Chicago Lane in the 6 p.m. game, as expected. The second game has coach Teri Rodgers and New Trier against 11th-seed Resurrection. If the favorites move on, a GBS-New Trier rematch will take place in a regional title matchup on Feb. 16.
The Trevians (17-8) warmed up for the postseason with the annual Sweet 16 Tournament Saturday at Lake Zurich. In game two, New Trier took on once-beaten Trinity. Take away a poor third quarter and New Trier played right with this team before falling 54-45. The Trevians were without the services of 5-foot-11 senior Emma Rossi.
“She has a high ankle sprain,” Rodgers said. “We missed her energy in this game tonight. We’ve only played four games this season healthy.”
New Trier had its last lead at 3-2 following a Maggie Lyon free throw. Trinity opened a double-digit lead in the second quarter. On a flip shot by Colleen McConnell, the Trevians pulled within seven points at 32-25 at halftime.
“That’s a third-ranked team,” Rodgers said. “It would have been fun to play them fresh. They didn’t play last night (Friday).”
New Trier hit only 2-of-9 shots in the third quarter. The good news was those two shots were both three-pointers by Lyon and Alexa Czyzynski. Trinity’s third-quarter lead, however, bumped up to 48-31.
The gifted senior Lyon had 21 points, while Meg Rosinski had all of her six points in the first half. Brigit Ieuter’s three-pointer concluded New Trier’s scoring. She finished with five points.
The Trevians did take home a win on Saturday. Senior Jessica Blackwell scored 20 points in the 58-53 win over a good Marian team. Lyon chipped in 12 points and guard Ieuter hit a pair of three-pointers on the way to nine points.
Still, there were no complaints from Rodgers about this rugged tourney.
“This was good competition and good games,” she said.
Friday night’s win over GBS was a close one at 31-29. Lyon hit the game-winning free throws and contributed 20 points in the key win.
New Trier was to visit Rodgers’ former high school, Libertyville, for a nonconference game on Wednesday night before heading to Waukegan on Friday.
