Wind advisory extended, then snow possible

A wind advisory has been extended in the Chicago area as strong winds are expected to continue into the evening.

The wind advisory will now be in effect until 6 p.m. for northern Illinois, including Cook, DuPage, DeKalb, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties, according to the National Weather Service. The advisory had been in effect until only 4 p.m.

A wind advisory means sustained winds of 30 to 39 mph or gusts between 45 and 57 mph are likely, according to the weather service.

Winds of that velocity can cause minor property damage and cause driving difficulties, especially for taller vehicles, the weather service said.

The wind is expected to continue into the early evening, when scattered snow flurries are possible, according to the weather service.
