To help residents better understand the effects of large storms and flood damage, the village will host two stormwater management education seminars next week.

The seminars are at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19 and at 9 a.m. Sept. 22 at te Village Hall, 510 Green Bay Road.

Each seminar will provide the basics of storm and sanitary sewer systems, general information on the causes of various types of flooding, steps homeowners can take to prevent future flooding and what to do in the event of a flood emergency.

“There will be a lot of good info on floodplains, flood insurance and ways to protect the structure of your property while we work on the big picture,” said Village Engineer Steve Saunders.

Trustee Richard Kates said the seminar will provide much needed info to homeowners in flood areas and urged them to attend.

“We can’t cure everything, therefore homeowners are going to have to take precautions,” Kates said. “A similar seminar was held in Northfield and (Saunders) and I attended. Those who attended it found it to be very helpful. Residents can get some ideas and I think they’ll be very appreciative of those ideas.”

Village staff will present and discuss the Winnetka Stormwater Management Plan and will answer questions. Both seminars will present the same information.

Those unable to attend may send comments via email to stormwatercomments@winnetka.org.~.
