Winnetka, Northfield wrapping up construction projects

WINNETKA — The end of summer signals the impending end of road construction season, and local communities have been busy completing projects.
Winnetka split their 2012 street rehabilitation program into two bid packages, spending a little over $1.5 million total to complete the street repairs.
Curran Contracting Company, of Crystal Lake, won a $646,995.70 contract for the rehabbing, milling and resurfacing projects of Hibbard Road, from Tower Road to Pine Street, and Winnetka Avenue, from Church Road to High Street. Another patch of Winnetka Road from Wilson Street to Sheridan Road was also part of the construction work.
A second contract worth $859,360.10 went to Schaumburg-based A Lamp Concrete Contractors, Inc., to rehab, mill and resurface parts of Pine Tree Lane, Asbury Avenue, Randolph Street, Kent Road, Hackberry Lane, Cherry Street and the Locust Street/Tower Road parking lot.
“We got a little bump (in funding) this year because we have state emergency repair funds to repair some of our streets,” Village Engineer Steve Saunders said of 2009 funding, $730,000 of which came to the village through the State of Illinois’ Emergency Repair Program.
“We started one contract in July and one in early August,” Saunders said. “We’ve got a couple sections where we’re doing complete curb replacement and pavement removal and replacement.”
According to a village memo, Winnetka’s 2012-13 budget allocated $1.15 million for the 2012 street rehab program.
Northfield Assistant Public Works Director Dick Knudson said his village didn’t have any projects in the way of street repairs, but other jobs were completed or will be completed before 2012 is over.
Knudson said $60,000 was allocated toward repairing some problematic sidewalks around the village which had “trip hazard” areas that affected pedestrians.
“The sidewalk repairs we do every year, but we’ve got an extra chunk of money because we found extra (problem) spots,” Knudson said. “The Village Board funded more than they usually do.”
Knudson expects the village to bid out water main replacement projects within the month for what’s expected to be more than $200,000 worth of work.
That sewer lining project includes a section of Willow Road, from Frontage Road to Happ Road, Sunset Ridge Road north of Willow Road and a portion of Country Lane.
Construction is expected to begin on those projects before the new year. Knudson said the village does have road repairs and resurfacing work on tap for next summer.
