New Trier’sRelay for Life set for Friday

Relay for Life has raised over $4 billion dollars as the largest cancer fundraiser in the world. Later this week, New Trier Township is helping to increase that number during the 11th annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
The overnight relay-style event brings the community together in raising awareness for cancer research.
From 6 p.m. on Friday, June 22 through 6 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, June 23 at the Wilmette Park District Center Fitness Club, Relay for Life team members will take turns continuously walking and running the track while other participants cheer them on through the night.
The event is designated as a Youth Relay because it has been organized and executed by students at New Trier High School. The night starts with a Survivors Lap from 6 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. where cancer survivors walk the track and are acknowledged for their brave fight against the disease. A luminaria ceremony will also take place after dark when candles are lit and a lap in silence honors those who have been lost to cancer.
“While the main objective of Relay For Life is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event helps spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer and unite a community in the fight against cancer.”
As of June 14, 179 participants making up 43 teams have registered in the New Trier Township branch of Relay for Life. Through team sponsorships and donations, $18,861 has been raised for cancer research and fundraising will continue during the event.
In 1986, the first Relay for Life event was organized after Dr. Gordy Klatt’s successful 24 Hour Run Against Cancer to show support for his patients and the American Cancer Society. As the organization continues to grow in 23 countries, the North Shore is joining in the fight for a cure and honoring those who have battled the disease.
