On Tuesday evening, March 27 at S. R. Crown Hall designed by famed architect, Mies van der Rohe, there was a gala celebration of the 126th birthday of Mies. S. R. Crown Hall is the home of the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago,
The event included a design theme, fascinating guests, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres –plus the styling of Vidal Sassoon operators. Illinois.In the mid-twentieth century, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe changed architecture when he designed buildings for structure and simplicity. Little did he know his functional approach would inspire Vidal Sassoon’s iconic haircuts - proving more can be done with Mies’ approach to “less is more.” Mies and Sassoon innovative styles endure and the world looks better for it.
A group of almost 300 guests toasted Mies with his favorite drink, a martini, and viewed Mies architecture and styling by Sassoon. – Models were present and had their haircut bySassoon stylists in Crown Hall. This unusual approach to design proved that design prevails in many disciplines.
The guests were welcomed by Justine Jentes, head of the Mies Society, Mark Hayes, Sassoon’s international head of creative styling. A toast to Mies was given by his grandson and architect, Dirk Lohan.as he stood in front of a sculpture of Mies by Hugo Weber.
Some of the guests attending included Barbi and Tom Donnelley, Shaun and Andrew Bloch, Abby O’Neil and Carroll Joynes, Mirja and Ted Haffner plus architects Ron Krueck and his wife, Anstiss, Helmut Jahn and his wife, Deborah, Dirk Lohan and his wife, Catherine of Chicago. North Shore guests included Robert Segal and his wife Alicia Rosauer of Winnetka, Paul and Kathy Wilson of Glenview and Warren Spitz of Northbrook.
The party is an event mounted by the Mies van der Rohe Society, a group that is dedicated to art, culture, and the preservation of the Mies Legacy in Chicago. S. R. Crown Hall is located on the IIT campus at 3360 South State Street, Chicago
