Family Friendly: Woofstock to keep dogs and their families entertained
Families and their canine companions can join in the fun at Woofstock Sept. 16.

Dogs should don their best duds for a chance to win a great prize in the costume contest at Woofstock. The event will be held noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16 in the new enclosed Dog Park at Larry Fink Memorial Park, 1377 Deer Creek Pkwy, Highland Park. Families will have as much fun as their canine companions at this annual event. “This year, we’re going to have A-Z Entertainment to provide dog-related music,” said Megan Lebak, recreation supervisor for the Park District of Highland Park. “We’re going to have two caricature artists on hand to do sketches of people and their dogs. There will also be a handful of vendors, ranging from animal hospitals to rescues to goods for dogs.”
Kids can bounce on inflatables. Hotdogs will be sold.
The event is free, but, “We’re asking that everybody bring a gently used blanket as a donation to benefit area shelter animals,” Lebak said.

She’s talking crazy!
It’s all in fun when ventriloquist, storyteller and singer Sandi Sylver presents, “Crazy Gibberish & the Cha-Cha,” 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at Northbrook Public Library, 1201 Cedar Lane. Kids will particularly enjoy discovering that the family entertainer learned ventriloquism from a library book.

Newborns through five-year-olds, and their parents, can learn American Sign Language at the Baby Signs Class, 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 15 at Glenview Public Library, 1930 Glenview Road. The drop-in family class, presented by ASL interpreter Jamie Stevens, will introduce vocabulary, songs and play activities.

Sneak a peek
Puppet classics and new works will be presented in “Fools Tango,” Theatre Zarko’s first full-length children’s production, scheduled to open on Oct. 6 at Noyes Cultural Arts Center in Evanston.
